Women have a special way of getting things done. They work together, they form lifelong kinships and we can be as patient as needed to get the job done. Women too are dedicated to preserving the beauty of nature, to using animals and their habitats wisely, and to teaching the next generation to hunt, fish and live in and enjoy the great outdoors.
So it is no wonder that the women of Safari Club International have come together as the SCIF Sables to find unique and important ways to carry out SCI’s mission to protect the freedom to hunt and promote wildlife conservation worldwide.
From this elegant and deceptively simple mission statement flow the programs supported and sponsored by the Sables. With the words “Our Outdoor Heritage,” the Sables claim partnership in the management and sustainable use of natural resources. But the key word is “continuing.” Indeed, women have always had stewardship of nature and education as a primary role, and will continue to do so. The Sables have raised this flag as their prime motivation.
Safari In A Box is a K-12 educational kit designed by the Sables to provide exciting, hands-on learning about wildlife. Filled with pelts, casts of tracks, models of scat and skulls, the Box provides many items that are not easily obtainable through traditional sources but are vital to hands-on educational experience.
The SCIF Sables have established five (5) Sables Hunting Heritage Scholarships at major universities to provide merit-based financial assistance for junior and senior wildlife science students.
More scholarships at key universities are in development for this program to encourage the next generation of wildlife managers and scientists.
Sables are involved in expanding educational opportunities at the SCI Foundation’s American Wilderness Leadership Schools®. This program introduces teachers and youth group leaders to the complexity of environmental and wildlife management issues, and the shooting sports. The design of the course is for teachers to return to their communities and spread the outdoor message in their curriculum.
The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman and More workshop at the SCI Granite Ranch in Wyoming is a premier program where Sables provide sponsorships. This empowering six-day workshop for women includes shooting sports, archery, fishing, camping, whitewater rafting, backpacking, journaling and wilderness survival skills and more.
Annually, the Sables seek donations for their popular fundraising Luncheon, Show and Auction at the SCI Convention. This must-attend event offers dazzling Live and Silent Auction items, entertainment and a time to gather together for fun and fundraising for the Sables educational programs.
By focusing their resources on the wildlife and conservation educational programs of SCIF, including the positive role of hunting in our present day society, the Sables strive to make a difference by “Continuing Our Outdoor Heritage.”
