Your local San Diego Chapter of Safari Club International really does give back to the community.
Teachers from Cuyamaca Outdoor School have been sponsored by the San Diego Chapter SCI since 2006 to attend the American Wilderness Leadership School. The school is owned and operated by Safari Club International Foundation out of Jackson, WY.
Through week long workshops educators and youth are trained in conservation education with focus on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. Educators are certified as instructors for the National Archery in the Schools Program and in NRA First Steps – Basic Rifle Instructor.
Your San Diego SCI Chapter has sponsored the following:
2006: 6 AWLS teachers
2007: 2 AWLS teachers
2008: 5 AWLS teachers
2009: 1 ALWS teacher
2010: 4 AWLS teachers
2011: 2 AWLS teachers
2012: 1 ALWS teacher
2013: 5 AWLS teachers
2014: 5 AWLS teachers
2015: 3 AWLS teachers
When the chapter was contacted several years ago to inquire if we had any interest in sponsoring an archery range at the Cuyamaca Outdoor School it seemed a perfect fit. Through this range some 12,000 sixth grade students yearly are introduced to a shooting sport. The sponsorship made sense then and continues with our common interests. Few programs have the ability to touch so many participants on a yearly basis.
The original support included providing storage shed for equipment, water jugs, and cones for the range. Through the years the chapter has continued that original support by covering the expenses of yearly equipment maintenance. Since 2012 the San Diego SCI Chapter has donated $2,600 to the archery school at Cuyamaca.
Additionally the Chapter made a 2016 donation of $500.00 to Cuyamaca Lake Recreational District for the annual kids fishing event, “Fishing in the Pines.”
