Join Us for SDSCI Membership Night with Jason Roussos of Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris
Jason Roussos was born in Ethiopia in 1977. His mother was an American and his father a 3rd generation Ethiopian Greek. Jason was exposed to hunting from a very young age while accompanying his father, Nassos, who started hunting professionally in 1981. At age 13 he took his first elephant on a self-guided hunt, and that same year won the SCI Young Hunter of the Year Award. After graduating with Honors from Colorado State University in 1999 with a degree in Wildlife Biology, Jason the following year became a fully licensed Ethiopian PH. Jason quickly established himself as one of Africa’s top professional hunters, winning the SCI Presidents Award in 2009. Then, in 2011, he was awarded the prestigious SCI International Professional Hunters Award, following in his father’s footsteps who won the same award in 1987.
Throughout his career Jason has guided some of the most well-known hunters in the industry and has had his hunts filmed by Jim Shockey, Archie Nesbitt, Marc Watts and Chris Dorsey, to name a few. He was the first PH to successfully guide a hunter to a mountain nyala with a bow, a feat that many people said would never be done.
He co-founded The Murulle Foundation, a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that conducts research and conservation efforts in Ethiopia. Amongst numerous successful projects, research conducted by The Murulle Foundation stopped the mountain nyala being upgraded to Critically Endangered by the IUCN in 2007. This research is the primary reason that sport hunting for this world class species is still possible today.
In 2009, he was appointed Vice President/Secretary General of the African Professional Hunters Association, an organization whose members represent the crème-de-la-crème of African PH’s. In 2018 he became president of the APHA and is currently the immediate past president.
In the off-season Jason resides in his home in Wyoming with his wife, Amy, and 4 kids.
